On April 5, 2024, a meeting of the international online seminar "Artificial Societies and Information Technologies" was held, dedicated to the report of Dino Carpentras (ETH Zürich).

Speech topic: The effect of integrating real data into social simulations

Brief abstract:

In recent times there has been a growing interest for integrating real-world data into social simulations for applications such as simulating policy. One of the most common procedures in these cases is to simply fix the value of some model's variables (such as happiness or opinion) with the corresponding data. In this talk I show how this approach can give rise to almost random results, producing uncertainties as big as the entire set of outcomes. Furthermore, by relying on measurement theory we will see where this surprising result comes from and how we can solve such a problem.
